The context
With over 100 screens and numerous workflows, the application had a lot of inconsistencies in terms of colors, iconography, interaction styles and patterns. The existing design also had major accessibility issues that hindered a smooth user experience. The ask was to keep structural alterations to a minimum in the app while enhancing the visual language. This approach allows the development team to swiftly incorporate the visual modifications with minimal impact on the existing code.
The process
We started off with a design audit of the whole app. This helped in understanding the inconsistencies across the app. All the issues were documented based on the severity and the type of the issue. This marvelous design audit became our treasure map, guiding us to plan and prioritize redesign tasks.
Redesign goals
We wanted to set clear goals before kicking off the redesign process. This made sure the whole team consisting of product owners, developers and designers were aligned to the end goal.
Scalable
New designs had to be created in a way that it can be easily scalable when new features are added to the app.
Low maintenence
Digital Will aimed to ensure that the redesign process would require minimal intervention in the app's existing structure and code base.
Persona of the app
The existing app lacked the charm needed especially considering it deals with the nitty-gritty of people's end-of-life plans and secrets. With this redesign exercise, we wanted to make the app -
Building the design system from scratch
I lead the creation of new design system, drawing inspiration from prominent design systems such as Google's Material Design System and Atlassian's Design System. Our approach throughout the entire journey was rooted in the principles of Brad Frost's Atomic Design philosophy. The app’s core values were communicated with the use of colors, text, icons, imagery and interaction styles. To ensure inclusivity and accessibility, we rigorously tested all components against WCAG's accessibility standards, aiming to meet at least AA-level compliance.

The results
With the help of the design system, we were able to redesign more than 100 screens in the blink of an eye (well, okay, a month). These designs were crafted with an emphasis on minimizing the workload for the development team when it comes to implementing changes and ensuring scalability for the future.
